Rugby Preliminaries
Written by Wei Han Photos by Wei Han
After five months of intensive prepration and training, it was finally time for Hall XI's Rugby team, the Titans, to face their opponents in the Inter Hall Games of 2009/10.
With such effort already expended, the team was eager to prove themselves and not let their hard work go to waste as they finally step up to the SRC field on Saturday, February 20 to face Hall IX in their first game of the season.
And they did not disappoint.
Clothed in black, the Titans opened the scoring against Hall IX with a try, and hence put the pressure on their opponents to come back. Although Hall IX replied with a try of their own, the team kept their chins up and persevered to score a second try, tying the match up at 10 points to 5, and secured the first win of the season.
Cheering them on was a large contingent of supporters and fans, including the team's externally engaged coaches and their families.
The second match was against Hall XII. Having seen Hall XII's quick running in their previous game, the Titans knew they had to up their game to rein in the attacking play and to create chances of their own to score.
The team played much better as a whole in this game, with Felix, Chao Ching and Hong Wei performing excellently to see that the Titans scored two tries and converted one while silencing the attack of the team in blue to end the game 12-0.
The knockout stages will be held tomorrow, Sunday February 21, at SRC from 3 p.m., please be there to support our Titans! |

Soccer Semifinals v Hall 3
Written by Wai Sing Video by Wei Yuan For many years to come, Hall 11 will not forget the events that took place on the humid night of February 18. Hall 11 soccer team booked an unprecedented place in the finals. Not only did they make us the center of attention, they also did it in style.
However, it was not a stroll in the park for our players either. In fact, we were so quiet in the first 20 minutes that the ball was mostly in our half. After 17 minutes of play, Hall 3 took first blood when we failed to get a touch on a corner kick which could only end up at the back of the net. Captain Alvin Yeo was unaffected with the blunder and kept spirits high by believing and motivating the players. The team’s sheer confidence was rewarded when midfielder Jin Quan shot a superbly accurate ball across a defender’s body, which left the keeper standing. Minutes before half time, Hall 11 had a scare when Hall 3 scored through a corner again but thankfully the goal was disallowed from some obvious pushing. A well played 1-1 was the score line for the first half.
The second half went underway with most of the possession held at midfield. Both sides were cautious in their defense which made attacking pretty difficult for strikers on both sides. The dead lock was finally broken 20 minutes into the second half when Jing Yuan persisted in breaking down the defense, dribbled past two defenders and slotted the ball past the helpless keeper to make it 2-1. Brilliant. Unfortunately, the advantage was short-lived when only 7 minutes later, the opponents leveled the game again. A free-kick was misinterpreted by our defender, and that gave their striker way too much time to easily tap the ball pass our keeper. All hope for a winner was down to set-pieces. Two minutes before the official full-time, Hall 11 won a corner kick. An own goal was almost gifted to us but the ball bounced over the bar. Corner kick was retaken. This time, it was Edwin’s turn to be in the score sheet. He took advantage of the chaos in the penalty box and shot the ball home.
It was a well-deserved victory for our players given that they have shed sweat and blood over a period of 18 months for a place in the finals. Coming back from a goal down is never easy but they have proved time and time again that they are mentally strong. With that, we wish Hall 11 soccer squad all the best in the finals. |
Swimming Written by Wei Han Photos by Wei Han
Swimming was held in the SRC Pool with all 16 halls participating in the only swim competition in this year's IHG.
The events were: 4x50 m male breaststroke, 4x50 m female breaststroke, 4x50 m male freestyle, 4x50 m female freestyle and 4x50 m team medley.
The day started off with the heats for all five events; as there were sixteen halls for each event but only eight lanes, each event had two heats.
Hall XI was disqualified due to technicalities for both breaststroke events. However, we managed to finish third overall for the team medley event, with Justin, Wei Chong, Gillian and Xin Yu competing in the backstroke, freestyle, breaststroke and butterfly events in the team medley.
After a break for lunch, it was time for the team medley finals. With a minor adjustment in the team strategy, Hall XI's team was ready to go in the finals. And go they did. Gillian, Xin Yu, Wei Chong and Justin all put in their best to ensure that Hall XI finished in third again in the finals, to secure our only medal in this year's Swimming IHG. |
Sepak Takraw QF v Hall 3
Written by Wai Sing Photos by Wei Han Our former takraw champions seemed poised on a cool Wednesday night. Expectations were as high as their confidence to better Hall 3 to reach the semis. The first game saw us leading all the way until the end, and never looked back. Due to great serves from number 9 and fabulous control, Hall 3 just could not catch up. Our takraw players were almost taunting the opponents, which clearly reduced their confidence. The first game ended 21-17. The second and third games were no stroll in the park however. Both sides were evenly matched, with the difference only in the referee and the crowd. The referee called for many standard technical fouls. But there were several unusual ones that went against us. These resulted in verbal arguments but they were harmless. It was understandable as they were key turning points that could have turned the game around. We tried really hard in the second game to head for an early shower, but Hall 3 was the rightful winner. The decider game was played with much emotion and commitment. The score line was tight right until 19-19 but again, Hall 3 got the better of us.

Badminton v Hall 16
Written by Fan Zeng Photos by Mai Thi Ngoc Tu
Before the match, the captain and players are well prepared in the sports and recreational center indoor courts. “No matter how good the opponents’skill is, we will try our best to win the game.” A player said.
The match began at 1:00pm. The first game is men’s singles event. Our player always gets scores using active running. But the opponent is a little stronger and uses personal skills to score. In the end, we lose the first game by 0:2. The second game is women’s singles event. Our player Chu Hui Qian has a best condition and plays superbly. On the other hand, because of her ability, the opponent loses the confidence so that we win the second game. But in the next double male, female and double mixed match, because of the limited strength, we lost.
But I think the process is more important than results. Well done, badminton team! Soccer v Hall 6 Written by Wei Han Photos by Wei Han
An exciting match unfolded at Jurong JC as Hall XI met Hall VI in the preliminaries.
In the first half, Hall XI trailed due to a mistake by Chunji when he let the second ball bounce in front of him, letting the Hall VI striker capitalize on that to score the opening goal. At the other end, Giap missed a golden opportunity to pull the team level when he missed a penalty kick.
The second half proved to be the more exciting one. With minutes left to play, Edwin scored a header from a freekick just outside the Hall VI penalty box. Another foul was committed in the penalty box, resulting in yet another spot kick for Hall XI. Ian made no mistake this time to win the match, and it was too late for Hall VI to get anything out of the match, even though they remonstrated severely with the referee.
