SoftBall Male (Final)After months of hard and disciplined training our relatively fresh Softball Team (m) stepped on the field for one last time on January 31st 2009, to take on Hall 3. The match that ensued was befitting for a final with no team showing clear dominance. The top of the first innings saw us put up a up miserable batting performance with only one of our top four batters making it on to base. The three runs that came in the first bottom didn’t affect our morale as this team has been known to fire under pressure. And fire we did with some splendid batting and tight fielding in the next two innings. It was great to see each and every one of us make a hit. Justin who seemed to be saving up his best for the final (most likely his last match for hall Xi, unless we convince him to join NIE) came up with two glorious home runs. Every player started to play out his skin. WaiWang's unbelievable run to one when the ball dropped just feet outside the batter box stands testament to this statement. Things couldn’t get any better, with only one half left to play we were in dominant position at 8-5 up. One would think a three run lead would have been sufficient to wrap up the game. However Softball is a very volatile game where things change with the slightest of circumstances. A couple of fielding errors and the game started to slip away from us. Before we knew it the game was tied at 8 all. Lack of communication on the field gave Benjamin and Hall 3 the winning homer of the next pitch. Both teams played magnificently and I’m pretty sure we gave the spectators a huge treat. I consider myself extremely lucky and proud to be part of such a bonded team. I would like to thank all our seniors for taking time off their hectic schedules and giving their all for this team. Though we were unlucky to lose ,congratulations to Hall 3 for holding their nerves and going all the way. “MY GOAL IS YOUR GOAL,OUR GOAL IS IH GOLD.” Journalist:Vijay Kamath |

The hall eleven rugby team played today at the inter–hall games 2008/09, meeting hall 14 and 4 respectively. By the end of the day it became clear to all who witnessed the eleven spirits – being a force to be reckoned with. The captain of the team Chao Zhang was decisive and scored the first try in the first match, and he did it with the poetic versatility and speed both of which he was well known for. Other tries were made by Shawn the team manager, and by ex captain Alvin and by other members of the team. Initially whilst the team won the first game, team captain Chao Zhang was far from satisfied with the results and by the second match the team had transformed itself into a tsunami that swept the clear the field of its opponents. One can only imagine the sheer tenacity and strengths these men possessed, as one by one the opponents of the other team were stacked on each other. We are proud to announce that the team has made it to the semis and are determined to place its name in the ranks of the winners at this year’s IHG. The Semi-final of softball in the Inter Hall games turned out to be a one sided affair with Hall 11 sweeping all honors. The match saw Hall xi play some good softball. Our team came up with great plays and didnt let hall 12 to settle down.Tight fielding and great pitching by Lim Eetat helped us achieve a solid 4-0 victory thereby giving us a berth to the final. This match didnt see great batting from either side ,though our batters did score they didnt do it with conviction and we must improve on that if we have to win the showndown agianst Hall 3 for the title on January 31st.Good Luck to our team and lets hope they win our first IH sports medal Journalist:Tarun Harish Ledwani |
Track
The SRC grandstand was abuzz with excitement as the athletes stepped onto the running track. The Hall 11 team had qualified for 3 out of 5 of the events during the track heats, namely the 4 x 100m (F), 4 x 400m (M) and the mixed 4 x 800m. The 4 x 100m (F) runners were Hui Yi, Yik Ying, Li Yi and Ferisha. Our girls really gave it their best and came in 6th. Li Yi was arguably our best runner of the day, as she overtook 2 or 3 others round the curve. After a short break, next up was the 4 x 400m (M) in which Jek, Wei Chong, Wei Yen and Surya took part. The final stretch was a close fight, but the guys also performed well and finished 5th overall. The 4 x 800m race was a killer marathon, as each of the 16 runners from each hall had to run twice around the entire track before passing the baton on. Jovina was the first to go, followed by Pei Yuan, Cecilia and team captain Willard. A steady effort by the four of them ensured a 14th placing for Hall 11. Good job team, and all the best in your training for next year’s IHG! Hall 11 will definitely do better next year! Journalist: Abigail Low Photographer: Maxton Huang |

A windy clouded morning greeted the soccer players of Hall 11 as they took to the field to take on the soccer team of Hall 7 in the quarter-final of the Inter Hall Games. The team started the match on a high note under the captainship of Ian. Two excellent goals were scored by the team in the first half itself. Both goals came from the magical feet of Alvin Yeo. The team put up a solid performance to resist any attacks against them. However, the tides changed in the second half. Hall 7 came up with a new found energy which kept them going and eventually resulted in them scoring three goals to finally beat our team 3 – 2. Though it resulted in disappointment, the Hall 11 team put up a solid performance throughout the games and much higher levels can be expected to be reached by it.

Netball
The netball quarter finals saw our hall going against hall 16. Our opponent had a vicious attacking strategy and seemed to have the advantage of having taller players, leading with a score of 2-1 10 minutes into the game. Several good saves by Angela narrowed the difference in scores, and our players soon picked up pace in their attacks and strategies. Scores aplenty on our side by Alvina and Juliana concluded the end of the first quarter with a score of 2-6 in our favour. For the second quarter of the game, Crystal took over Juliana as GS. Excellent footwork and agility of our girls swiftly ended the game with a victorious 14-4. Undaunted by our players' tenacity, our hall 16 opponents put up quite a good fight and managed to stagger our team's progress, scoring a goal each time our players did the same. It was rather nerve-racking, considering that it was possible for our opponents to catch up with our scores during the remaining of the game. However, the last two quarters of the game came and went in a flash, with a triumphant score of 9-18 at the end of the third quarter. The hall 11 netball team soared into the semi-finals with a score of 12-25. The team demonstrated brilliant rapport, showcasing precise passes and shoots throughout the game, and the dexterity of our players was an evident mark of their hard work and skills. What is the best way to silence your critics? Well for Jing Yuan and his teammates, they figured that out on the field on the first day of school. It was a short and sweet, 1-0 victory over Hall 8 hockey players, to earn them a ticket into the semi-finals. To be honest, we had a shaky first few minutes; hitting the ball astray and ball stopping seemed more difficult at night. However, as we warmed up and gained more confidence over our opponents, we soon realized our first attempt. Fouled just outside the shooting circle, a low ball was hit with power but only to travel wide. We tried attempt after attempt to break the opponent’s defense and soon it was rewarded. 8minutes into the game, we were awarded a penalty corner. A swift stroke on the stick sent the ball to Jing Yuan, who was waiting just outside the scoring circle. A clever tap into the shooting circle and a full swing of the stick thundered the ball pass everyone including the keeper, as if everyone just stood still. Shock and despair could be seen on the opponent’s faces. Every Hall 11 player and supporter alike was jumping with joy. A beautiful, memorable moment and a great 10 minutes played. After the game, Jing Yuan told me that he was actually afraid and pressurized after scoring the only goal of the game, and pressured he was. After the short break, the opponents wanted the control of game. They tried to hold us back from their half and kept pushing up. But they had no way through. We played a tactically more defensive game, waiting for slip-ups and counter attacking as and when it was possible. As the final whistle was blown, our players were overjoyed. And as Jing Yuan expressed himself, they were all elated. Although hockey is a team game and credit should be given to the team for a brilliant performance, Jing Yuan, who is the team captain, happens to be the heart and soul of the team as well. He, with no double, is the man of the match today. As the hockey team has won today, we should all give our full support to them, to book a spot in the hockey finals. Congratulations to the hockey team and all the best in the semi-finals! Journalist: Yu Wai Sing Photographer: Eugene Lee |
Soccer
One day before semester 2 starts, Hall 11 soccer players have a heavy task of bringing glory to Hall 11 soccer. They were one step away from a respectable amount of glory, or otherwise just another team which did not make the cut to the next stage. Were they up to the challenge? The clash on Sunday morning was none other than with our neighbor. But no team was willing to be merciful at this stage. Hall 11 kicked off the match and tension built up very quickly. Both sides had their fair chances with us taking a few shots at the goal while Hall 10 had a free kick which went wide off. But the match took a turn starting from the 17th minute when a glorious drive from outside the 18yard box leveled up the score to 1-0. Four minutes later, a pass from midfield set Ansel off as he dribbled the ball pass three players before driving a low ball from the left corner of the field. He was guilty for both of the goals. As our team was playing marvelous football, it would be only justified if the captain made the score sheet. And true enough he did. On the 29th minute, Ian hit a grounder shot from the penalty area which eluded everyone including the keeper to make it 3-0. As for our opponents, only one good play from them is worthy to be written. A lob over our keeper seemed like a certain goal but keeper, Karnjote Singh forced a rebound on the post, and a point blank rebound shot from the opponent only managed to reach the keepers hands. At half time, 3-0 seemed like the end. But there were definitely more. As players switched sides at half time, so did the concentration of players on the field. We were controlling the game and were well aware of our advantage. On the 50th minute, Ansel would become a hero and most probably earn him the man of the match. Another long range shot from just outside the penalty box proved that he is the player to watch in the quarterfinals and also changed the game to 4-0. An obvious foul in the penalty box ensured that this is a trashing and not just a win for Hall 11. Alvin Lim was given the golden opportunity to wrap up the game. He hit a low shot towards the right, only to be saved by the keeper. But fast reaction enabled him to take the rebound off the keeper and he didn’t disappoint on the second try. Unfortunately, we could have kept a clean sheet but there was a slip in our penalty area. One of the two shots at our goal miraculously made its way into the back of our net. The opponent managed to dribble past two of our defenders and just tapped a slow pass towards the keeper. It was just one of the ‘chicken feet’ moments for our keeper which fortunately didn’t cost much to the outcome of the match. 5-1 was the end score line with a hat trick from Ansel and a penalty sealing the victory for our players. Celebrations would have to be short-lived as the quarterfinal clash is just around the corner. Congratulations to Hall 11 soccer players and all the best in the quarters. The softball girls faced their sternest test yet in the quarterfinals, up against defending champions Hall 3. The girls started out brightly, with the first 3 batters Jing Hang, Felicia and Hui Yi all scoring hits that advanced the runners to third base. Unfortunately, luck was not on our side and our next 3 batters all struck out, ending the first inning 0-1 with Hall 3 leading. Our players made a valiant attempt to play catch-up in the next 2 innings, but Hall 3 proved to be too strong to overcome in the end and our team succumbed 0-9. Nevertheless, the girls have already improved on their showing this year by making it to the quarterfinals, and with many players in the team still rookies, I believe Hall 11 can expect greater things from them in the years to come. At 1pm sharp, our male softball team took to the pitch under cloudy skies. The knowledge that their opponent was Hall 6, last year's 1st runner up, only made our players more determined than ever to cause a major upset. The opponents batted first, and managed 3 runs in the first inning to lead 1-3. Despite a slow start, our team soon got into their groove in the second inning, limiting Hall 6's players to a single run in the top half. Gaining momentum, 4th batter Wee Khiang hit a marvelous home run less than 10 minutes into the bottom half. Now thoroughly fired up, our players went from strength to strength. A powerful double by Ivan pulled Hall 11 into the lead for the first time, 7-5. Bubbling with confidence, our team went into the third inning determined to keep their lead. Left fielder Sebastian was undoubtedly the hero in the top half, catching 2 high balls with such surety as our supporters erupted with cheers. When it was our team's turn to bat, however, things did not go as smoothly as expected, and the third inning ended without our batters garnering a single run. As a result, the scoreline remained at 7-5. With a 2-run lead, our team only needed to restrict Hall 6 to less than 2 runs in the fourth and final inning to secure their places in the semifinal. Our opponents did their best to try and level the score, but a good catch by Vijay and 2 more by Justin were sufficient to send Hall 6 packing. With the win already in our bag, the bottom half was a mere formality. Still, our players refused to let up. A fly ball by Ivan and a line drive by Sebastian enabled our side to score 2 more runs, wrapping up the game at 9-5. Having seen for myself what this team is capable of, I am convinced that they will go farther yet, and wish them all the best in the semifinals against Hall 10! Badminton
In the badminton quarter-finals, Hall 11 was pitted against Hall 3, a sports powerhouse. Being the underdogs however did not dampen the spirits of the Hall 11 badminton team, who played for all they were worth. Kian Giap was the first up in the men's singles. He put up a good fight, but his opponent was clearly more experienced, and he succumbed in two sets, losing 6-21 and 2-21. Next to make an appearance was Yi Zhen in the women's singles. It was obvious that Hall 3's strategy was to bank on their singles players, who were very strong. Hence it was no surprise that Yi Zhen's valiant attempt could not stop her opponent from winning both sets 3-21, 1-21. With 2 games down, it was up to the doubles pair of Qi Yong and Daniel to keep the Hall 11 flag flying. And that they did in remarkable fashion, leading from start to finish to take the first set 21-9. The second set was a more closely-fought affair. Despite being down 3-6 after the first few minutes of play, Qi Yong and Daniel displayed great spirit to level the score at 11-11, then surged ahead to claim a 18-15 lead. Unfortunately, a few mistakes in the dying minutes proved costly, as the pair went down with a painfully close scoreline of 19-21. The loss however only galvanized them, and in the third set they dominated their opponents, racing easily to a 11-6 lead. Although the opponents clawed back a few points to bring the score to 13-10, Qi Yong and Daniel regained their momentum quickly and were in complete control after that. Some lightning-quick smashes and a series of errors by their opponents were enough to secure the third set 21-14. Jovina and Yokyin, our female doubles pair, found themselves up against opponents just as strong as themselves. The opponents drew first blood, but Jovina and Yokyin soon leveled the score at 1-1. One could be forgiven for thinking that this was the final match instead of a mere quarterfinal, given the way the game played out – the score tied at 2-2, 3-3 and so on all the way up to 8-8, causing supporters of both teams to remain on the edge of their seats. Some excellent play saw Jovina and Yokyin gain a 15-11 lead, but alas, luck was not on our side as their opponents fought back and eventually won the first set 17-21. The second set was a similarly nail-biting experience in the beginning, with both pairs unable to gain a clear lead until the score was tied at 11-11. After that though, their opponents seemed to lose steam, and Jovina and Yokyin led to the end, winning 21-16. But in the third set, the tide turned against us, with Hall 3 ahead 5-11. Despite Jovina and Yokyin narrowing the gap to 14-18, the gulf eventually proved too wide, and they lost 16-21. This put the final score at 3-1 in Hall 3's favour, but our players can certainly take pride in the fact that they refused to admit defeat even when luck was against them, and went down fighting. The takraw quarterfinal saw Hall 11, the defending champion, up against last year's semi-finalist, Hall 12. With Hall 11 eager to defend their crown and Hall 12 just as eager to make amends for their semi-final loss the previous year, sparks were expected to fly. Our first team comprised Tayzar, Jia Hao and Kian Giap, with Kian Giap making his second appearance in the day for Hall 11 after the badminton quarterfinals earlier in the afternoon. The scoreline was extremely close up to 11-11, but Hall 12 capitalised on some unfortunate mistakes on our team's part to race to a 6 point lead at 11-17. Although our players did well to pull the scoreline to a more respectable 16-18, it was not enough and our opponents won 16-21. The second game in the quarterfinal proved to be the most exciting by far, with supporters witnessing long rallies, as well as superb headers and deft footwork by Ivan, Jun Hao and Esmond. With the score standing at 17-7, team captain Alvin decided to substitute Yuxin for Esmond, who was starting to tire. Hall 12 was obviously no match for our second team, which never relinquished control of the game and eventually went on to win by a very comfortable margin, 21-14. With the overall score tied at 1-1, the game went down to the wire. Our third trio of Ansel, Ken and Chunji took to the court, knowing that the outcome of their game would determine whether Hall 11's takraw team would continue to battle it out at the semifinals. Supporters of both sides also understood the gravity of the situation, with the result that every point scored was punctuated by raucous cheering. Our team did their best, but a lapse in concentration towards the end proved to be their undoing, and they succumbed 14-21. It was surely a disappointing result for a team that had hoped to repeat their heroics of last year, but our players demonstrated their sportsmanship by shaking the hands of the winners, offering congratulations. Hopefully, our team will put this loss behind them and work harder to bring glory to Hall 11 once again in the next Olympiad. Journalist: Lim Jia Yi Photographer: Goh Sher Li |
Scrabble
Armed with jackets, pens, calculators and for one, even alarm clock- the familiar examination essentials- our scrabble players were spotted mugging the various word anagrams right before the start of their match. With the tables at Hall 8, the venue of the match, neatly arranged into 8 rows of 5 and the first row being labeled from A to H, it was indeed akin to a all-too-familiar examination setting. As our players entered the hall, exuding an air of confidence, yes, victory is undoubtedly in the air. The “examination” has started. It is going to be a test, a test of our scrabble players` wits, word power and confidence. And like all Hall 11 players, our scrabble players had it all.
The team consisting of 9 players led by captain Alvin Lee, ended the first round against Hall 10 with a score of 2-3, losing marginally by a mere 6 points. This is a sign, a sign that the time is ripe for our players to unleash their full potential and not show our opponents any mercy. With hall 11 spirit running in them, our players wore a serious look on their faces, their eyes not leaving the scrabble board, and they charged on and won the rounds against hall 5, 8 and 14. Though we lost to a strong opponent, hall 12, we ended the first day of the scrabble match on a high note by winning 3 rounds out of 5 rounds, paving the way for our future victory.
The second day of the match saw our players winning 1 out of 2 rounds with Hall 11 emerging as the winner in the round against hall 3 while the match turned favourable towards our strong opponent, hall 6. Nevertheless, our scrabble team did us proud by overall winning 4 rounds out of 7 in this battle of wits spanning over two days. Yes! We are in the quarters. Alvin, Amreet, Bing Sheng, Audrey, Rahvi, Jessica, Qiuting, Judy and Huiwen, the players of the scrabble team, kudos to you! Well done Hall 11! Journalist/Photographer: Jewel Chiew Soccer
The first half of our second Group A soccer match was relatively uneventful, with no goals scored. Our opponent Hall 2 started the game with a vicious attacking strategy, and seemed to have the upper hand. But their attempts were all in vain, as our goalkeeper Alvin Lee saved one goal after another. In the second half, things started to get more heated up. Barely a few minutes into the game, a Hall 2 player was shown the yellow card for a foul on Chong Yu. Then during a corner kick, our goalkeeper Alvin was involved in a tussle for the ball and got his knee hurt badly. He had to be carried off the pitch, and Zul stepped in since there was no substitute goalie available. Shortly after that unfortunate incident, our team converted a corner kick into a goal! But Hall 2 took advantage of the distraction and managed to equalize the score within a few minutes. The rest of the match went goalless as well, although we had a couple of near misses. With the score still drawn at 1-1, the game went into extra time. Team captain Ian sprained his ankle and had to be substituted. The Hall 2 players simply could not work their way through our seamless defence, so the match ended in a penalty shootout. Since our first-string goalkeeper was out of action, we lost 3-4 on penalty kicks. But all our players undoubtedly showed great sportsmanship and teamwork – truly the Hall 11 spirit! We arrived early on NIE hockey pitch to warm up. Today’s match is against Hall 13, a hall which we had met twice in the qualifying rounds in last year’s IHG. Last year, both matches were a close fight, and each went down to penalty shots.
The first half played out evenly as both sides fielded strong defenses. As the first half drew to a close, the score remained at 0-0. Both halls were equal in skills and technique, so it was difficult to determine who would eventually win.
The second half began with much excitement. Under the hot sun, the hockey girls fought on bravely, determined to win the match. We made a few good attempts to attack the goal this half, but unfortunately, our opponents’ fierce defenders prevented any goals.
The match went down to penalties, just like last year. For the first 3 sets of penalty shots, both sides did not made any score! The goalkeepers from both teams were agile despite being dressed in bulky goalkeeping outfits. The game eventually ended when the 12th penalty taker from Hall 13 scored. We have tried hard. Perhaps we needed more luck, more experienced players and more training. We will come back next year to do better! Thanks to all supporters who came down! Under the hot and humid conditions inside the Sports and Recreational Centre, Hall 11 table tennis team were to face their opponents, Hall 2 in an exciting quarter-final encounter. Knowing that the opponents would be tough to beat, team captain, Esmond Loon did several changes to the line-up, hoping that it would work in our favour.
In the first match, it was the men’s singles with Esmond Loon coming on for Hall 11. Things definitely went according to plan as Esmond clearly had the advantage over the opponent. He managed to win the match in 3 sets, with the scores at 11-6, 11-2 and 11-7 respectively. The opponent was outclassed by Esmond’s calm judgement and careful play, much to the delight of our supporters.
The next match would be the women’s singles with Hall 2 fielding an IVP player. Knowing that beforehand, Judy To was picked to play the women’s singles, as they hoped the stronger players would win their respective matches. Needless to say, Judy was outclassed by the opponent, who didn’t give any chance although Judy did put up a fight. She was beaten in 3 sets with the score of 2-11, 2-11 and 1-11 respectively.
The crucial point of the match was obviously the men’s doubles. With Terrence Ho and Eugene Heng pairing up, they had an immense pressure to win their match. Fortunately, their opponents made too many mistakes which enabled us to win the first 2 sets with ease with the score of 11-5 and 11-9. The next set proved to be a close one as our men had to come from behind to reach game point, only to let the opponents force the game into deuce. But the men definitely lived up to their expectations with 2 decisive and powerful shots made sure it would be the last set they had to play. The score was 12-10.
In the women’s doubles, Ong Yi Zhen partnered Angela Han to take on considerably strong opponents from Hall 2. The women played well, considering the difference in skill was obviously huge. They lost in 3 sets, with the score of 2-11, 3-11 and 2-11 respectively. However, it was well within expectations of the team as their strategy had worked well so far.
With the overall score of 2-2, the team banked all their hopes on the last match, the mixed doubles. Our mixed doubles boasted an IVP player in Guan Xukai and also arguably the best female player in the team, Anna Yeoh. It would seem that the team’s plan worked perfectly. However, Hall 2’s mixed doubles were extremely good, and on top of that, Xukai is more accustomed to playing singles while Anna had been battling fever for the last few days. Their lack of chemistry proved to be decisive, as their opponents were very aggressive which overpowered our doubles. A loss would be inevitable, as they came crashing down in 3 sets with the score at 2-11, 5-11 and 7-11 respectively.
Our team did so well to reach the quarter-finals, only to come inches away from winning the match to gain semi-finals glory. However the team must be commended, for reaching the quarter-finals is no easy task. Hall 11 extends its congratulations to our table tennis team for coming this far. It also appears that the table tennis team is going to start training at the start of next semester for next year’s IHG!! Good luck and “jia you” for your future endeavours! Softball (Female)This match with Hall 2 would determine if we can move on to the quarterfinals.
In the first inning, we fielded first. Our fielders manage to strike out a player at Base 2. Hall 2 players made 2 other mistakes, namely throwing the bat and hitting an infield fly. Hence, they did not make any run in the first inning. Great! We managed a run during batting, so the score after first inning was 1-0. Although we are leading, the margin is still small for our opponents to catch up easily, and they did so in the 2nd inning. They managed 3 runs. We are determined to get it back. We were fierce during batting, and had 2 runs. The score became 3-3.
Hence, the 3rd inning became a crucial one. Thankfully it was a good one. 3 opponent players were strike out in a row! Now we only had to do one run to win the game. With just 2 batters, we achieved the run! We were elated. However, we continued to finish up the game. Hall 2 seemed discouraged by the loss, and did not play well after that. The final score was an amazing 10-3. Thanks for all the support! They were really encouraging! Now we are into the quarterfinals! Journalist: Wu Jing Hang Photographer: Goh Min Si |
Bridge
Right after Christmas, Hall 11 was back in action in the IHRG, this time with bridge being the event. The team, comprising of Joan Hsu, the captain, Desmond Wu, Jake Chey and Boey Jun Hao plus 2 reserves Tang Joo Wen and Desmond Goh set off from Hall 11 to Hall 8, where 15 other Halls would put their skills and wits to the test in an undoubtedly “chim” game.
Hall 11 was drawn into a group which were made up of Hall 10, 6 and 9. In their first match, they were pitted against Hall 10 with Jake and Jun Hao pairing up while Joan partnered Desmond Wu. It was definitely an intense match as everybody got all worked up in order to win. Only God knows what these people were thinking as they used all their brainpower to outsmart their opponents. They did not disappoint as they beat Hall 10 after a gruelling 1 and a half hours.
After a short break, Hall 11 went up against Hall 9, the defending champions with the same line-up. This time they were truly given a run for their money as Hall 9 proved to be a very strong opponent.
The next match would be against Hall 6. Seeing that Hall 6 had lost once before to Hall 9, the team needed a win to have any hopes of reaching the quarter-finals. This time however, Joan Hsu sat out to let a relative newcomer to the game, Joo Wen to gain some experience. But they were up against a totally different line-up from the ones that lost to Hall 9. Our team fought well but ended up short against a considerably strong opponent.
Nevertheless, our bridge team had done us proud considering they seriously lacked players. Therefore residents of Hall 11 should not hesitate to join the bridge team as they will surely welcome new players with open arms. There was something different about the hockey game on Boxing Day compared to the other games that were played. It wasn’t the air itself. Maybe it was the well deserved rest Hall 11 hockey players had on Christmas day. Maybe it was because the 1-0 victory over Hall 6 was still fresh in their memory. Whatever it is, the air of confidence surrounding them was reinforced by the cheering and chanting of support from the side line. It was certainly refreshing for the team. And they enjoyed it all the way throughout their game.
Hall 16 players looked tougher and stronger in general physique. However, they would learn that being strong physically is useless if it’s your only strength. Down to the first half of the game, both teams looked fierce and determine from the start of the game. Hall 11 was strong in midfield but Hall 16 did not give it to us that easily. Hall 11 made some sweet shots from the 25yard line but the density of players in the shooting circle proved to be too difficult to get the ball pass the keeper. The opponent did made some attacks as well but our keeper, Alvin, was not bothered. So, after 10minutes, first half was still square with no goals.
Intensity was increased in the second half when only our supporters’ voices could be heard. However, the opponents still put up a great fight. Most of the action could be tasted in midfield. Attacks were intercepted mostly just out of the penalty area and shooting circle. It was not until the dying minutes of the second half when the opponents had a penalty corner. Somehow, our players did not look tensed at all. I guessed they have been well prepared for this. Having said that, the penalty corner taken and a lifted shot was delivered very fiercely and missed the goal by inches. Hence, an exciting game ended in stalemate, for the start of penalty shootout. Each team was given a few minutes to sort their list order before the shootout. The confidence in our players just seemed amazing as if it will be just like another walk in the park. The first up was the captain of the team. Number 10 Jing Yuan calmly placed the ball on the penalty spot and looked at the 4yard-wide goal. A swift flick to the corner did the trick to make it 1-0. The opponents were next, but only managed a miss, side off the left. Our second player to take the penalty got it pass the keeper to make it 2-0. It was now up to the opponents to make it a tighter game. Who would have known it was Alvin’s day? The ball was shot to the right, which was a powerful one as well. But Alvin, reflexive or intentional, stuck his foot out, just in time to stop the ball. And there were roars and cheers only to the opponents’ humiliation. Then, it was the defining moment of the game. With his back printed number 4 facing everyone except the keeper, he took guided a low ball to the left, pass the helpless keeper, and to give a cue for his teammates to jump in celebration. After eluding Hall 11 for 4 years, they are now in the quarter finals.
Captain Jing Yuan proudly said that it was the determination and commitment they had over the opponents that could bring them so far. Reiterating that he would certainly be playing the same strategy in the quarterfinals, it would definitely be not easy for any team that faces us then. But for now, congratulations to the hockey players of Hall 11! Journalist: Yu Wai Sing Photographer: Gay Si Hui Squash
The second match was held against Hall 5. Competition was tense as both our players and their opponents were strong players. As such, the score for each individual set was very close. Each shot was a critical step to victory and our players reflected great fighting spirit through running after every ball even when there was a possibility of missing the shot. Even though the first 3 sets were a loss, our players believed in competing till the very end. With such strong team spirit and a never-say-die attitude, we finally managed a score of 1 – 4. Table Tennis
Hall 11 table tennis team gave an exhilarating performance today as they faced off against a formidable opponent in Hall 16. Both teams knew each other well as they played against each other in their first match. Hall 16 emerged as winners that day but Hall 11 were adamant not to let history repeat itself. The team were raring to avenge themselves as they went for a different strategy this time.
In the first match, it was the women’s singles with Ong Yi Zhen playing for Hall 11. Her opponent was a very tough one and obviously well trained. Poor Yi Zhen fought well, but it was impossible to win this match as the opponent trashed her mercilessly to take the game in 3 sets, winning each one at 11-1.
In the next match, the men’s singles, Guan Xukai faced another strong opponent from Hall 16. Xukai did not disappoint, as he played superbly against a very experienced opponent. However, it was not enough as he lost 2 sets at 7-11 and 8-11 respectively. He stood bravely during the next set and gave his opponent a run for his money as he won with the score of 11-9. The 4th set was very dramatic as both men were neck in neck as Xukai came from behind to force the game into deuce. However his opponent’s experience became the winning factor as he calmly took he set at 13-11.
With 2 games down, the women’s doubles provided a boost in confidence as they easily took down mere novices from Hall 16. Anna Yeo and Angela Han did not break a sweat at all as they smiled all the way to victory. Hall 16 clearly put their best players first as their women’s doubles were all over the place, trying to even serve properly but they must be commended for their bravery to fight for their Hall. In all, our women took the game in 3 sets at 11-0, 11-2 and 11-4.
Next, it was the deadly combination of the team captain, Esmond Loon and Eugene Heng in the men’s doubles that really heated things up. The duo proved to be a very good combination as they were superior against Hall 16’s men’s doubles. They played with great dexterity and agility and could have done better as their opponents made a lot of mistakes which gifted our team with valuable points. Overall, our men’s doubles took the game in 3 sets as well, with the exact same score each at 11-5.
With our doubles performing exceptionally to make the score 2-2, it was up to our lively mixed doubles pair of Terrence Ho and Judy To to deliver the final push that would earn the team a quarter-final entry of the tournament. One could be forgiven for thinking that Judy would be a pushover given her sweet appearance but she definitely surprised us as she played very well to serve as back-up to Terence. The opponents were dumbfounded as they succumbed in the first 2 sets at 11-8 and 11-5. However one should never underestimate their opponents, even more so when they have beaten you once before. Hall 16 upped their game to take the 3rd set at 13-11 in a nail biting finish to the end. With our supporters giving them extra motivation, the pair calmly finished off their opponents in the 4th set with the score of 11-6.
Even with 2 games down in the beginning of the match, Hall 11 table tennis team showed great mental strength to achieve a memorable come-back win. With the team now in the quarter-finals, more challenges await but with the spirit of Hall 11 burning in their hearts, they can take on any opponent that comes in their way. “..and also there is a national hockey player in the team too.”
That was what one of the many Hall 6 supporters proudly said, talking to his friend while walking pass me. It was a few minutes before the game and somehow I believed it as Hall 6 hockey players looked touch to beat during their warm up.
As one could observe, the opponent were fired up before the game, shouting and cheering were all for Hall 6 as our players quietly took their assigned positions on the field. Would the immense support for Hall 6 be as daunting as it seems to be?
The first half was started by the opponents, who soon managed their first attack but it was a tame one. That did not stop our players to push up front and attack the opposite goal. That soon gave us our first shot way out from the 25yard line, which skimmed just pass the goal post. It really was a tight match, with both teams being equal to the challenge. Both sides had their fair share of shots and chances, but I must say, our players seemed more dangerous. After 7 minutes of play, we had our first foul outside the shooting circle. The ball was shot with speed and power but unfortunately it was just off the target. Until this point, both sides played a really fast paced game. However, the brilliant attack just lacked one final touch to test the keeper, to get a goal. An exciting first half left the spectators wanting for more, as both sides were still chasing for a goal.
A good first half meant our players could only be hungry for more. Just 3 minutes after the game started, there was a build up in attack from our side. A pass from the center to our right winger was made through one of the opponent’s legs, and he just sprinted off nearing the corner, before he made a pass to the center, into the shooting circle. Four players were there to receive it, two from each side. There was a struggle for the ball. Clashing of sticks could be heard. Then suddenly, a clean, swift stroke on the hockey stick, guided the ball straight into the goal. The keeper was left standing helplessly at his own goal post. It was a goal for us! Number 10 player, Jing Yuan magnificent effort gave us a precious one goal lead. After that goal, the players’ confidences were boosted and were doing everything to protect it. We were trying really hard to keep the ball out of the shooting circle, and were doing a really good job. They could not try our keeper at all, and pulling the trigger at a desired position was near impossible most of the time. Whether we were against a team with national players or not, we were the obvious champions.
Hence, the game ended in a much deserved outcome of 1-0 in our favour. Shot on target were scarce but one powerful shot was enough to separate the winners from the losers. The whole team played really well together but the hero of the day would have to be Jing Yuan. Congratulations to our Hall 11 hockey players. Journalist: Yu Wai Sing Photographer: Pan Lin Badminton
The first badminton match was held against Hall 7. The first set was played by Wai Wang. It was a tough fight as the opponent was also a strong player. Nevertheless, Wai Wang maintained his cool and won the match with his agility and quick reflexes. Next up was the captain, Hui Qian. She really lives up to the captain’s position with her accurate shots. The next 3 sets were also impressive. Even though the last set – mixed doubles – was a loss, Qi Yong still managed to demonstrate his superb skills through his smashes and swift moves. All in all, the badminton team had done Hall 11 proud by winning the match 4 – 1. Journalist: Goh Min Si Photographer: Gay Si Hui |
Darts
Lady Luck was just not on our side in this year’s IHG Darts tournament. Halls 1, 3, 8, 10, 12, 13, and 14 were in our half of the draw. Unsurprisingly, we lost to the seeded halls and the jaw-dropping accuracy of their players. There were a couple of close calls in the next few rounds. We salvaged our pride with a 4-1 win over Hall 13, but it was not enough to take us through to the next round. Even so, our players definitely gave it their best shot. To our darts team members: Alvin Teo, Brandon Kuah, Chao Zhang, Desmond Wu, Mei Rong, Ravi, Wenhui and Yik Ying, Hall 11 is proud of you! A loss is a loss, but at least we went down fighting! As the blazing sun rose on the bright Monday afternoon, our Hockey girls braced themselves for their first Hockey match versus Hall 4.
The first half played out evenly as both sides fielded strong defenses. The midfield was the key and control over it was fought fiercely. Everyone was bated with anticipation at the closely fought match. But Hall 4 had a lucky break through our defenses, and the attacker shot the ball into the back of the net at point blank range. Despite falling behind in score, our girls rallied and fought bravely. We advanced right into the enemy front, but their ironclad defenses stopped the play each time.
The second half began with much excitement as our girls tried furiously to garner a goal or two. Despite a few good plays, our girls were pushed back by Hall 4‘s more experienced players, who finally made two more goals with shots from afar. Yet we did not lose heart and continued playing valiantly to the end. The final score ended with 0-3. Our team is working hard to strengthen our weaknesses in defense and offense. We would like to thank all supporters who came down and boosted our morale! Also we greatly appreciate the welfare team who provided cold water and med kits for us. We shall fight our best in our next match! Journalist: Wu Jing Hang Photographer: Pan Lin Squash
The first squash match was held against Hall 10. It was indeed a fascinating and eye-opening experience for most of our players as it was their first match and they were dealing with IVP players. The final score was 5-0. Despite the crashing defeat, our players still did our hall proud with their never-say-die attitude. As our squash captain had put it, “Even if we know we are losing, we must not give up till the very end in order to make ourselves a worthy opponent.” That leaves the entire team in high morale and fighting spirit and they will continue to do their best in the next coming match. At 6'o clock sharp our hall takraw team took on a determined looking hall 4.The defending champions needed a victory to confirm their slot in the quarter-finals.However they fell short, giving hall 4 a 2-1 victory on a miserable day for Hall 11 that witnessed the failures of both the squash and Hockey (F) teams. The experienced trio of Alvin,Ansel and Ken began proceedings.Hall 4 got of to a great start and seemed to be running away with the game. With some good team work our Takraw team did manage a comeback however they lost with an agonisingly lose scoreline 21-19.This setback didn't deter the second team consisting of Tayzar,Zul and Giap who came up with some brilliant headers to steal a comfortable 21-12 victory. With everything even it was up to Alvin, Esmond and JunHao to come up with a few tricks.Hall 4 started smoothly and started to gain momentum. A rusty Alvin was soon subbed by YuXin who did manage to pull back some points and decrease the deficit to only 6 point with the final score reading 21-16. A sad day for the takraw team as they lost 2-1 to hall 4.I wish them the very best for their next match and hope to see gold once more. Journalist: Vijay Kameth Photographer: Wu Shu Ying |
Wei Qi Semi FinalsIn the semi-finals, our opposing team was from Hall 1. However, given the wits and experience of our team players, Hall 11 managed to beat Hall 1 and make it into the finals with little effort. The score is 4 – 1.
FinalsThe final match was held against Hall 12. 5 players were sent from each hall. It was a fierce competition as both halls attempted to emerge victorious. Anxiety grew when one of our players first lost the match. Fortunately for our hall, the remaining players remained calm and played on. The final score is 3 – 2. It was a moment of joy as Hall 11 arises as the champion hall in Wei Qi. Overall, the match was exciting as it was not only a game of the wits but a game of the mind as well. Apart from their skills and aptitude, our players also displayed their professionalism and eagerness to learn through staying back after the competition to discuss their possible moves and tactics with the opposing team players.

Softball (Male) A hot and humid afternoon weren't perfect conditions but the Hall 11 softball team did not let this affect them as they came up with a brilliant victory against a formidable hall 3. The first innings saw numerous errors from our fielders and batters alike resulting in us goind down 5-1.After a much needed team talk we started to calm the tense nerves we started to play like a team with everyone chipping in to do his part. The second innings not only saw some good hits by all our batters but also some very aggresive base running.Rather than the big lusty blows the team on the captains orders started to look for singles and therby crept up inch by inch to get a 6-5 lead.We managed to hold them in the bottom in innings thanks to some brilliant fielding and very clever pitching by Eetat.
It was pretty clear that we needed to bat well to win the game from here on.The third innings saw a sacrificial hit by Ravi the hit was so high that the fielder took a while to compose himslef after the catch this enabled to of our runners to sprint home. Two more good hits by Vijay and Justin ensured that 4 runs came in before we were out. Thus after the third half we were up 10-5.All that was left to do was hold them.An error by the infield let a run come in but after this the fielding tightened up.With one strike out and two simple plays to one the match ended with a 10-6 win for us and a ticket to the quaters.I wish the softball team the very best and hope to see this team go all the way!!!

Volleyball (Male) 20th of December might be a usual Saturday for most people in NTU, but definitely not for Hall 11’s volleyball players. The clash with Hall 12 players at Hall 2’s outdoor volleyball court was filled with suspense and excitement, right until the end.
The men’s team did put up a vicious fight in order to play volleyball at the next level. Both teams looked confident in beating the other during the practice match. Starting the first game were Wai Wang, Qi Yong, Jun Xiang, Shi Nquan, Wei Yen and Shaun. A lackluster performance by our players ended the first game at 14-25.
However, we picked up the tempo in the second game and somehow managed to break the opponents down with sweet dips and blocks. Many would say that it was because the opponents substituted their best attacking player, who really could spike very powerfully, but I would strongly contest as we managed to outplay them as well. It was a close battle from the start until it 6-6, when the opponents started making mistakes. We didn’t spike much or go for the kill, but maintained a consistent flow to gain control of the game which effectively gave us a 8-point advantage before the opponents could gain a point. It went all the way to 24-9 in our favour to wake the opponents up as they started fighting back. But too little too late it was as we managed to tie the match with a 24-16 win.
On to the third game, a flip of a coin was made to determine who started the game. With our players focused and determined, we just needed to emulate our previous game, improvise and apply to ensure a clear victory against Hall 12. And consistent we were. We played safe as we concentrated mainly on receiving the ball and getting the ball over the net. That ensured us the advantage at 13-12, before both teams switched sides. But things don’t always turn as well as it should. It was our turn to make mistakes and their turn to control the game. Receiving the first ball served by the opponents seemed more difficult and we started to lose control of the game. The captain called for a time-out at 14-20 to gather the team. He just wanted them to get the first ball and pass the ball accurately and nothing more fancy was needed. But turning the game around seemed next to impossible. All things considered, it was a well played match by our men’s volleyball team which ended the game at 17-25.

The qualifying round was a fascinating one. Well-trained and experienced players from Hall 11 were set to pit their skills against opponents from Hall 2, 3, 6, 10, 12, 13, and 16. Competition was tough, especially those against Hall 6 and 12. Nevertheless, we made a sweeping victory by beating all 7 halls hands-down. The scores are as follow, 5 – 0 for Hall 2, 10 and 16, as well as 4 – 1 for Hall 3, 6, 12 and 13. According to one of our players, Yong An, Hall 12 is one of the strongest halls in Wei Qi. Therefore, the victory against Hall 12 has definitely boosted our team’s morale and confidence in making to the finals. Journalist: Goh Min Si Photographer: Goh Min Si Basketball (Male)
One final match was all that separated our men’s basketball team from advancing into the quarter-finals of the IH tournament. It was obvious our men were hungry for victory after coming down against Hall 6 in their previous match. However, Hall 3, their opponent today were certainly no pushovers and both teams provided a thrilling encounter that kept all spectators on the edge of their seats.
The first quarter started off at a fast pace as both teams tried to find their first basket. However, it was Hall 6 who drew first blood when they scored after a series of exchanges. But Ong Kang Fu equalized when he was awarded 2 free throws to make the score 2-2. Later on, Hall 3 failed to capitalize on 4 free throws that were given to them. We were given an early scare when moments later, Ong Kang Fu suffered a nose injury which left him bleeding. Not to be undone by the setback, our men played excellent basketball to allow Chen Siyuan to score two 3 pointers, much to the delight of our supporters. Soh Yung Seng added to the score after a beautiful interception to stretch their lead to 8 points. Later, Lee Kai An put his name into the score chart with 1 point coming from a free throw. Toward the end of the first quarter our men conceded 2 baskets to allow Hall 3 to trim the lead to 5 points.
Our team kept up their tempo during the second quarter and were rewarded with a nice 3 pointer from Tan Wei Yen. Hall 3 also replied with a 3 pointer of their own to keep the score at 14-9. After that, the men gained 4 points with team captain, Andy Chew and Chen Siyuan scoring. Tan Wei Yen provided another 2 points to restore their lead to 8 points. Hall 3 began playing more defensively and slowly made their way up to close in on our team’s lead. We were also fortunate not to have another injury when Terence Wang fell awkwardly on his head. The score at the end of the second quarter was 20-17.
Realising that Hall 3 started to gain momentum, the men played bravely to prevent the opponents from scoring. But it was not enough as Hall 3 equalized to put the score at 20-20. To make matters worse, the third quarter was tainted with poor referee decisions at crucial points of the game. This clearly frustrated our players as this allowed Hall 3 to gain a 3 point lead with the score at 23-26. Soh Yung Seng provided the last score for the team at the end of the third quarter to put the score at 25-27.
Both teams went all out in a scintillating final quarter but it was Hall 3 who struck early with two shots, one being a 3 pointer. Hall 11 managed 2 more points with Tan Wei Yen and Terence Wang scoring from free throws but Hall 3 had better chances when they made it 27-36. The only black spot of the quarter was the dubious refereeing which frustrated both sides. Our men fought on in true Hall 11 spirit even till the very end and Terence Wang scored the final shot which put the score at 29-38.
Even though the men had lost but there was nothing to be ashamed of as they put 111% effort in their IH campaign. Hall 11 pays tribute to our gallant players for all the matches they have played. Journalist: Desmond Goh Photographer: Yu Lu Softball (Female)
Our match with Hall 6 started at 130pm. Hall 6 is a strong opponent, but with encouragement from many, we are motivated to face them bravely.
In the first inning, we started with fielding. Perhaps we were not yet into the game, so our opponent managed to make 5 runs. When it was our turn to bat, we made 2 runs. Hence, this inning ended with a score of 5-2, with Hall6 leading. It then began to drizzle. The score so far was not to our advantage, yet we did not give up, and fought on fearlessly. In the 2nd inning, we managed to hold our opponents down, so they did not make any runs this time round. However, when it was our turn to bat, we, too, did not make any runs, so the score remained at 5-2 after the second inning.
The game ended after the 3rd inning, with a score of 6-2. Despite losing the match, we knew that we had put on a good fight. Not only that, we all attempted to swing our bats rather than wait for walks.
Now we hope to win our 3rd match against Hall 2! We still have a chance to go into quarters. Go Hall 11 softball girls! Also, thanks to everyone who came down to support our match. We will continue to work hard! Journalist: Wu Jing Hang Photographer: Maxton Huang |
Water Polo This being a crucial match determining if we would advance to later stages, many residents came down to give their support to our players.
As the match began, Hall 9 made a strong start with an early attack. Despite our best efforts, we were constantly pushed to be on the defense, and were trailing behind our opponent.
In the second half, our team went on the offensive. With controlled passing and decisive shooting, we managed to score 2 goals. However, this was not enough as the opposing team quickly got the better of us and increased their lead.
With the end score at 2-12, our water polo team is out of the competition. It was however, an enjoyable experience for the team who despite having many inexperienced players had fun in the process. Journalist: Nicholas Chua Photographer: Hu Hui Juan Table Tennis
For the first round of IHG table tennis, the Hall 11 team found itself pitched against Hall 16. It was going to be a tough match, as the opposing team boasted of several strong players. After a heated battle, our men’s singles player Xu Kai was narrowly defeated by a score of 1-3. Next up was women’s singles player Judy To, who also lost but played very well considering the fact that she was a novice. Despite the unfavorable 0-2 overall score, team captain Esmond and the crowd of supporters still cheered the Hall 11 players on wholeheartedly. Eugene Heng and Tay Xi played men’s doubles, producing a series of impressive smashes but ultimately losing 1-3 to their opponents. The loss was hardly a surprise, as Hall 16 progressed far in last year’s IHG as well. Nevertheless, the entire table tennis team deserves commendation for giving it their best! Go Hall 11!

Carrom The second round of carrom preliminary rounds was held on 17 December 2008. The day began with our Hall Eleveners up against Hall 7, who were rather strong players. Our players pit their wits and skills with a challenging opponent but lost marginally with a score of 2-3. Next up was the game with Hall 6, this time with a switch of some players, and the result was 1.5-3.5. Determined to fight the last battle of the day well, our players performed well and beat Hall 5 with a perfect score of 5-0, rounding up the day's match on a high note. Our players did not manage to qualify for the semi-finals. Nevertheless, our carrom team showed perseverance and flexibility in taking on the games with suitable tactical skills and also displayed good sportsmanship during the games.
Journalist: Gay Si Hui Photographer: Gay Si Hui Volleyball (Male) During the warm up, practice session, it could be seen quite clearly that Hall 11 players could not match the power and the jump height compared to a Hall 6 player. Nonetheless, power is only key when there is accuracy. And that is what the Hall 11 Men’s team showed in practice and throughout the game. Maintaining accuracy and composure in taking shots was what the men’s team had for a better chance to win. Or was it? Our players did very well at the start. At 4-4, it really looked as if the power the opponents had would not be a set back for us. Qi Yong, Wen Yen, Jun Xiang, Shi Ngiun, Wai Wang and Gai Shaun all started the game with intensity. Both sides were battling each other to have an advantage. But deep into the game, pressure could be felt on our side as we trailed by an increasingly greater margin. As we got to 4-4, the opponents started to get the better of us. And what would make it worse and embarrassing was when we started making technical fouls, repeatedly. In volleyball, a player can never touch the net during game play. Similarly, when a player is serving, his feet are not allowed to touch the out line or the back line, before he serves the ball. We forgo many points as a result of these two technical fouls, which were really uncalled for. Hence, the opponents left us far behind, as we never could catch up with them until it ended 11-25.
However, for the second game, whether our players were out of luck or just not good enough, the result at the end was cruel. We really had the game in our hands for almost the whole game; until it was stolen from under our noses. From the beginning of the game, our players were leading, even though by a slight margin, but were getting ahead every time. Our players were doing everything right. Spiking and blocking spikes as if they suddenly had a way to break down the other team. But it came down to 18-18, where both sides were equal; nothing to lose and everything to play for. We just could not get another point from them no matter how hard we tried. So that was it. Concentration and morale was perfect. But the 18-25 result at the end of the second game was far from reasonable for the effort of the team. Journalist: Yu Wai Sing Photographer: Hu Hui Juan Volleyball (Female)
The second volleyball game for Hall 11’s women’s team saw them serving the game. The initial five were Ho Yik Ying, Sim Yuee Yhuee, Yeoh Tek Huey, Tan LiYi, Gan Yan Li and Hui Wen. The first game was played quite aggressively as each player was trying their very best to win every point. We were really good at the net, with mostly accurate backrow (attack performed by a back row player) attacks and cross-court shots. However, there was a basic but crucial weakness in our women’s team. Points were lost unnecessarily as we failed to match the opponent’s service. On top of that, we could not take advantage of our strengths in attacking as the opponent switched tactical approaches to accommodate their weaknesses. As a result, the first game ended 12-25 in the opponent’s favour.
After a short water break and a few words from the coach, the girls went off to a bad start as we trailed eight points before grabbing a point from the opponent. Throughout the entire match, the girls were just playing every point and really focused on the task at hand. With tired legs and no experienced player in the team, we did show a few moments where there might be a chance for us to tie the match at two games a piece. The girls started fighting back and won six straight points to get the game to 19-11 but it proved to be too little too late as Hall 13 got the better of us to make the game 11-25. Only five minutes of the first innings had passed by when Eetat struck out the third and final batter. A lead of 7-0 had everyone in the team fired. Our batters oozing with confidence continued to strike the ball cleanly with Ravi and Justin hitting two home runs.13-0 after the second and we were well on our way to victory the second half of the third innings saw two stunning reflex catches by Waiken playing at third base. With Eetat stepping out to give Sebastian a chance to pitch a couple of walks followed. However after a while Sebastian gained confidence and we managed to hold them. Journalist: Gay Si Hui Photographer: Gay Si Hui Softball (Female) At 830am in the morning, the softball girls gathered in the canteen to have a quick breakfast before heading down to SRC for our first IH softball match. There was good pitching as well! The good start certainly gave us more confidence for the rest of the match. After switching over to batting, players continued to perform well. The first inning ended with a score of 5-0, with Hall 11 leading. At the second inning, our fielding lasted a while only because opponent players were strike out fast. During batting, many players again performed well, and Yik Ying made a home-run. The total score was 12-0 after this inning. We did not do as well for the last inning, so the opponent team managed 5 runs. The game ended with a score of 13-5. It was great that we won the match! Yet we knew that there is still room for improvement. We thank our supporters for being there and cheering us on. Also thanks to softball guys for helping to train us and guide us along the match! Journalist: Wu Jing Hang Photographer: Jewel Chiew Basketball (Male) After a convincing win over Hall 12 in their opening match, Hall 11 men’s basketball team looked forward to securing their place in the next stage of the tournament with another win over their next opponents. However, it would be no easy task as they have been drawn into what is considered as the Group of Death of the tournament. In addition, their next match would be a real test to see if they have any chance of reaching the next stage as their opponents come in the form of the defending champion, Hall 6 With high hopes of causing a major upset, our team dispatched their best players with the likes of Chen Siyuan, Andy Chew, Ong Kang Fu among others. However it was Hall 6 who struck early as they managed to put a few shots into our basket to gain what would be a crucial lead. That lead was enough to place Hall 6 in a good position, despite our team tightening their defence as they played catch up for much of the game. Overall, our men did well as they tried to close the gap. However, Hall 6 got the better of them, with superb marking and teamwork which left our men with little space to play, let alone score. Heroics by arguably the best player in the team, Chen Siyuan during the final quarter managed to close the lead to 11 points, as they pushed Hall 6 all the way. During the dying moments of the game, with the rest of the team giving utmost support, our players gave it their all but momentary lapses of concentration came to be their undoing as the defending champion wasted no chances to take the game with the final score at 54-38. To celebrate their victory, the humble winners performed a cheer for our team in true spirit of sportsmanship, which our team duly replied. With 1 win and 1 loss thus far, our team will have to win their next match to have any hopes of reaching the quarter finals. As long as they keep up their fighting spirit as they have shown today, coupled with their good skills, Hall 11 believes they can make it to the quarter finals. Go all out Hall 11 men’s basketball team on your next match!! Journalist: Desmond Goh Photographer: Maxton Huang Basketball (Female) Having lost their first match against Hall 8, our women’s basketball team looked forward to redeem themselves in their second match, this time against Hall 5. This was a match they could not afford to lose as a second straight loss would send them crashing out of the IH tournament. Therefore, it was not surprising as the team fielded a full strength side featuring more players compared to the previous game The first quarter started of promisingly as our women found themselves in the lead. Their passing and marking was much better this time as new players brought in more aggression as well as teamwork into the play. By the end of the first quarter, they managed to gain a 3 point advantage with the score at 6-3. Buoyed by the unexpectedly good performance, our team maintained their strategy as they tried to look for more points.. Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse after that as the opponents slowly closed the gap with solid defending. The women soon found themselves in a familiar position, trailing the opponents, albeit by just 2 points at the end of the second quarter. In a closely fought third quarter, the team did all they could but their poor finishing let them down once again although they had numerous chances to score. Things were even more interesting of the court, as the team’s coach spotted several irregularities with the linesman’s call. Upon bringing the matter up with the referee, several decisions were overturned. However, this was not the last time the linesman would make a mistake as he made more errors as the game progressed. This frustrated the women’s coach as he made several protests against the linesman decision. However it was all in vain as our girls succumbed to a 4 point deficit towards the end of the third quarter with the score at 10-14. With injuries to the players and fatigue setting in, the team were conceding more baskets to the opponent. The final score was 10-22. We were defeated. The women put on a brave face although we could sense their sadness deep in their hearts. Their bodies may be bruised, spirits broken but hearts will remain strong as ever. Well done girls! Snooker
15th December 2008-A day of promise, a day of deliberation, a day of nerves and a day of our 1st IH gold. Our snooker team led by a fresh and spirited William Thor reaffirmed its position as the best in NTU with a splendid display of snooks, pots and cuts. This team oozing with confidence dropped only 2 games en route to the final. The quaters were a mere formality. With all players on song we crushed, a helpess hall 4 team, 5-0.Jerry played out of his skin and dazzled most with his breathtaking shots. The semis too wre mainly academic with hall 16 managing to scrape only a single game, giving us a convincing 4-1 victory.Up next was a battle for gold against a solid hall 6. At around 8 pm ,Nanyang House -the venue for snooker, begin to fill in with supporters from both halls. Jerry from our hall and Kok Leong kicked off the epic final which lasted almost three hours. The game saw an outstanding Jerry playing the some of the most outrageous shots. The best of three 1st game was reduced to a one sided affair with Jerry clobbering the oposition 71-2,77-14. 1-0 up and things couldnt be any better. What followed next was a thrashing.Edwin try to hold his own against NTU and hall 6's best-Jeffrey.However his best wasnt quite enough as he succumbed to a superior foe 12-55,29-61. 1-1 still anybodys game in this tight race to 5. William took on Wen Han in an epic four ball match that lasted about an hour. The neck and neck race to 127 was accompained by groans and cheers.William put up a brave show and was unfortunate to lose 127-123.This tight four ball game was followed by an in form Alvin who played a solid game to bring the score level to 2-2 with a remarkable 129-68 win. With scores level it all boiled down to the unassuaming Eetat to deliver. After a slow start eetat started to build his game with clever snooks.Despite trailing for most of the game eetat manage to squeeze a 1-0 lead in the final game with a 14 point last cue. Game 2 saw eetat domiate his oppoisition right from the start. His calm and expressionless face couldnt mask the tension in the air.Alex did his best to prevent the inevitable but eetat eased through with a comfortable 52-22 win. Thus giving us our 1st IH gold for this season.
Eetat,Edwin,Alvin,Jerry and William have made us proud and given us that extra incentive to be a HALL elevner.Heres all the best to the rest of our IH players who undoubtedly will be inspiried by this amazing performace.May we have a GOLDEN CHRISTMAS.Go for gold!!! The volleyball female tournament started at 9am in the NIE indoor volleyball court and our hall was up against hall 12. At the venue, volleyballs were streaming everywhere and our girls were practicing really hard. The game started, and the opposing team was really strong. Throughout the game, there were casualties aplenty on our side. Jean got hit in the face by a volleyball, and Yik Ying fell while trying to save the ball. The worst of the lot was Hui Qian, who fell and sprained her ankle in a valiant attempt to save the ball. Despite having to walk around with a swollen ankle throughout the day, she still came to support the guys' team in the afternoon. Even though their opponents were strong, our girl's team managed to score a few goals with Angela and Yik Ying as our scorers. Although we have lost both rounds, kudos to our girl's team for putting in their best efforts for the game. Journalist: Jasmine Kum Photographer: Maxton Huang Volleyball (Male)
The volleyball guy's tournament started off at 3 pm, following the girls' match in the morning. It was our hall players against the team from hall 1. In the opening round, our players were Wei Yen, Wai Wang, Jun Xiang, Qi Yong, Shi Nguan, Shawn and Ryan. The guys from our side showcased brilliant teamwork and it was an easy triumph for us, with a score of 7-2 20 minutes into the game. Several fine saves by Wai Wang, Shi Nguan and Shawn played a significant role in widening the score gap between ours and the opponent's team. At the end of round 1, our team was leading with a score of 24-17. For the subsequent round, Wei Yen and Jun Xiang were replaced by Seng Long and Alex. The opponent's team got a lucky head start of 5-3, but our team managed to catch up with the scores almost immediately. An excellent score by Qi Yong helped to amplify the disparity in scores to 12-14 in our favor. We won 25-18 at the end of round 2, which concludes us the victor of today's match! Water Polo Water polo, a game which not only requires fast swimming, but also good stamina. On this saturday afternoon, our water polo team gathered at the SRC swimming pool amidst loud cheers from supporters to take on their first opponent. Led by captain Jun Hao, our water polo team fought valiantly against Hall 13. Despite having relatively inexperienced players, the team gave it their all during the game, swimming tirelessly to gain a foothold against their opponents. Despite their best efforts, the water polo team eventually succumbed to the ultimately stronger Hall 13 team in a 6-0 defeat. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience for our players, who are unshaken over the defeat and looking forward to the coming match on Thursday. |
Tennis After narrowly losing the first round of tennis to Hall 12, our players remained optimistic for the second round. This time, we were up against Hall 2. In the absence of our captain and star player Rena, women’s singles player Yi Yun was outdone by her IVP opponent. However, Jovina and Abigail managed to even the score when they pulled off a surprising 7-5 victory in the women’s doubles. Simon and Angela thrashed their opponents 6-1 in the mixed doubles, but Ivan and Shu Wei lost in the men’s doubles, despite a valiant effort against their skilled opponents. With the overall score tied at 2-2, vice-captain Jerome played the deciding men’s singles match, snapping the strings on two racquets in the process! But in the end, the IVP from Hall 2 was just too strong. We may have lost the match, but our spirit is unbroken! Good job and well done to all Hall 11 players! Hall 11 women’s basketball team was up against Hall 8 in their opening match. With our men’s team giving support from the sidelines, the women were adamant not to let them down.
The first quarter started with Hall 8 grabbing 4 points due to poor defending by our women. Our side called for a timeout so that the men could give some advice on defending to the women. Unfortunately it did little to help as the opponents clearly had superior skills. Despite our women giving their best, our team conceived 10 more points to trail our opponents at 0-14 at the end of the quarter.
At the start of the second quarter, our women showed better teamwork and with the men cheering them on, they frustrated the opponents with solid defending. And they were rewarded with 2 points with Angela Han scoring of a rebound. However, Hall 8 showed their mettle with 3 scores in a row to stretch their lead to 20 points at the end of the second quarter.
Despite having an insurmountable deficit going into the third quarter, our women showed great spirit to fight on. They had better chances this time but were let down by sloppy finishing. Alrina Tan finally managed to score late in the third quarter.
The last quarter proved to be harsh on our team as fatigue had begun to set. Our women was pushed all the way by the opponents as they scored 10 points before Hui Yi managed to pull one back for our team. Our team conceived another 8 points before a late injury scare on Sarah Chan. Luckily she wasn’t injured although we had lost the game with the final score at 6-48.
Although our women had lost but they kept smiling on and even performed a cheer for the winning team. Their never say die attitude coupled with their grace when losing is exactly why they are the pride of Hall 11. All the best for your next match girls!! Hall 11 basketball team’s first game of the IHG was against Hall 12. Having watched their women counterparts succumb in an earlier match, they were all pumped up to gain a winning start to their IH campaign.
The first quarter started off with a bang as our men opened the scoring with 2 free throws after Terence Wang got fouled. Our basketball captain, Andy Chew added to the score moments later. Hall 12 started playing more defensively and managed to equalise the score. Our team regained composure and Ong Kang Fu added 4 points thanks to great teamwork. But Chen Siyuan dazzled the opponents with his superior dribbling skills to grab a total of 7 points to lead at the end of the first quarter at 18-11.
The opponents started the second quarter more aggressively to counter our team’s speed. And it worked in their favour as they closed the gap to 2 points. Our team quickly picked up pace to stretch their lead to 8 points with Soh Yung Seng, Chen Siyuan and Tan Wei Yen contributing to the score.
The third quarter was closely fought as both teams had trouble breaking the opponent’s defence. Both teams had roughly about equal possession but our team was given a run for their money as Hall 12 tightly marked our men to prevent them from using their agility. As such, only Ong Kang Fu and Lee Kai An provided 2 points between them, with both coming from free throws.
With only 7 points separating the 2 teams, our men reorganized and played at their own pace during the last quarter. Their opponents found it difficult to keep up and conceived 4 points. However, it was after Chen Siyuan brilliant display of scoring 3 times in a row that sealed the game for us. A free throw given to Lee Kai An late in the game provided our last point with the end result of 39-23.
After the game ended both sides displayed what sportsmanship is all about by exchanging cheers. Well, it looks like Hall 11 men’s basketball team is definitely on the right track to go far in this IHG tournament. Journalist: Desmond Goh Photographer: Yu Lu |

Badminton
Excitement, cheers and grim determination was in the air at the Sports and Recreation Centre as the second inter-hall badminton match was held. The opponents: Hall 2; who pulled no stops to call in their IVP players in this match. No matter the competition, our valiant warriors put up a good fight with the Hall 11 flag flying proudly. It was a nail biting experience as the players displayed their talent. From spectacular saves from fast overhead smashes from the opponent to the lightest of taps to drop the shuttle just clear of the net, it was a psychological mind game as the players predicted and reacted quickly with breathtaking dives and keeping a flexible playing technique. Throughout all, it was a close match. The first match, men singles, was played by Wei Ken with a 2-0 loss, though both matches were real close with an average of 16-21 in each match to Hall 2. The second match was the men doubles with Qi Yong and Daniel on the court. They won with a game point of 2-1 with excellent coordination with each other. Anna played the third match with zeal but against a strong opponent with a 2-0 loss. The fourth and last match was played by Jovina and Alrina who made jaw dropping precision shots that set up the opponents to be a little complacent, forging them ahead. However they had played against an IVP player with another seasoned partner and ended with a 2-0 loss. Though our players put up a strong fight, determined to the end, Hall 2 was victorious. However, if you would allow this humble reporter to comment, I thought that our players did well and I know that Hall 11 is very proud of you. |
Tennis A half an hour delayed start didn't seem to affect the morale of our players as they took on HALL 12 in today's IH-Tennis.The first match of the day (i.e Males Singles) saw Joshua dominate ,taking the game 6-2.True to the spirit of hall 11, Abigail low not more than 5 feet tall, put up a spirited performance in the Women s Singles. This however was not quite enough to snatch victory.Next to follow were the enthusiastic pair of Jewel Chiew and Rena who gave it their all but ultimately succumbed to the stronger pair from hall 12. Simon and Jean Ong fought an eagerly contested battle in the mixed doubles and were quite unfortunate to end up on the losing side with a 5-7 scoreline. Eugene Heng and Shawn Ang played some brilliant tennis, to win the males doubles 6-3 and end our first tennis clash in this IH season on a winning note. The final score 2-3 did not seem to deter the temperament our IH players seemed quite eager to take on their next opponent.GO 11!!!
Sepak Takraw Our hall gave a stunning performance this afternoon against Hall 15 with a remarkable 3-0 win. We started the first game with the exerienced trio of Ansel, Alvin and Ken who gave a flawless performance leading to a 21-4 win. Our second game consisting of Giap, Tayzar and Jia Hao followed up with a resounding 21-16 victory. Our final team consisting of Alvin, Junhao and Yuxin finished the game with a solid 21-17 win. |
OthelloOthello was the first event to mark the beginning of the Inter-hall games. The size of the crowd that gathered in the function room of hall 8 was overwhelming! No matter where you look, players from their respective halls were armed with laptops and game sets. All the other players were anxiously practicing before the game starts, but our players seemed totally unaffected by all the fuss that was going on around them. The event started almost 15 minutes later then the stated time and the first game was played against Hall 10. Our representatives were Yong An, Qing Xiang, Zi Yang, Kenny and Amy, who is the only rose among the thorns. Zi yang was the first to finish the game. Kenny was on a winning streak at the beginning of the game, but unbeknownst to him, his crafty opponent had laid down a deathtrap —he had pre-empted most of Kenny’s moves and eventually went in for the kill. Our loss during the first round ignited the fighting spirit in our players and they started strategizing during the first interval. Subsequent games were played against hall 3, hall 1, hall 16, hall 13, hall 14, and hall 15. Our players won some and lost some but alas, the eventual score was a smashing defeat of 1 win and 6 losses. Our players were strong, but their opponents were stronger. But at least, our players managed to clinch a victory for our hall. |
