Basketball Male v Hall 3 Written by Wai Sing Photos by Wei Han The basketball men’s team was down at SRC for their match against Hall 6 on a breezy Wednesday afternoon. Both teams looked ready to give the other a run for their money. The start of the match saw both sides somewhat equally matched with some scrambling for the ball at both ends. Hall 11 took first blood with a calm reverse layup by number 10. However, Hall 6 out ran us with sharper shooting and stronger defense. Just before the end of the 1st quarter, we scored with a sweet 3- pointer but sadly we were trailing by 14 points. The 2nd quarter was no better when we could find our way to the net only eight minutes after the restart. When the whistle blew, Hall 6 had increased the gap to take a 20 point lead. After the half time break, there were definitely better passes and more control from our side. We took a couple of rough tackles and earned some free throws but the opponent took advantage of fast breaks and open spaces. It seemed like there was no stopping them. There was still plenty of time to make a come back in the 4th quarter and solo dribbling to make a hook shot was the way to go. Hall 6 players seemed more composed given their huge advantage. Number 11 drew some foul but could only shoot 50 percent each time. The quality of our players were proved to be present when number 12 scored a jump shot with a hand in his face. All the sweating was harshly repaid by a 24-48 loss to our opponents. Hall 6 had more control in our half and got hold of more rebounds. It was a good game to reflect on our weaknesses and improve for the next game. Basketball Female v Hall 14 Written by Nay Che Maung Photos by Wei Han It was a one fine day of IHG games, the sun was not so bright and the weather was just nice. Hall 11 basketball girls were at the basketball court together with the supporters along the sideline encouraging and cheering them. They were up against Hall 14 for their first match. The first quarter was quite challenging for them since they were not sure the opponent strategy. Hall 14 took the lead scoring 4-0 against hall11 in the first two quarters. After the first and second quarter the girls showed better teamwork and had learned from their own mistakes and opponent’s mistakes. They come back faster, stronger making them to defeat the opponents with a score of 6-4 during the first half. After the first half, the girls were ready to put up another fierce fight. It was a close fight and the game was intense and exciting. The girls kept the strong spirits to fight on the more aggressive opponents. During the 2nd half, both teams were fatigue yet took turn to score. As the game progressed on, the supporters were more anxious and become more supportive. Their cheering was overwhelming the field. But in the end our girls took the victory against worthy and tough opponents of hall 14. The final score was 17-14. The girls played pretty well and proud for their team spirit and endurance. Written by Cheryl Photos by Cheryl Our scrabble players started off the day on a high note, practicing fervently before the match began and advising each other on the best moves to make. Taking advantage of the slight starting delay, our players, with an air of quiet confidence, were scanning through the word list and committing them to memory. This would be a test of their verbal prowess and their ability to keep a level head throughout. The match commenced in Hall 8’s multi-purpose hall, where tables were neatly arranged and quickly cluttered by alarm clocks, calculators and score sheets. It was to be an encouraging 1st round for our team, narrowly missing the chance to draw first blood by losing 2-3 to Hall 8. However, the odds were stacked against them, and our team found itself losing 0-5 and 1-4 to Hall 9 & 10. The team persevered on through the next few rounds, their fighting spirit well and alive despite the tough competition faced from other teams. Bouncing back from the first 3 defeats, they managed to close the scoring gap and gain momentum, but were overcome in the 4th round by 2-3. Alas, their opponents were simply too strong, and the 5th round against Hall 16 too ended in defeat. Nonetheless, our players remained upbeat, positive that the next day would bring brighter prospects with all the experience gained from today. |

Day 1 - 15/12Water Polo v Hall 14 Written by Kah Kiat Photos by Wei Han The pristine waters of the SRC swimming pool played host to a clash between the Hall 11 and Hall 14 water polo teams in the preliminaries. Both teams were hyped up for this match as both hoped to record a win in their first match. The game started in a cautious manner as Hall 11 took control of the ball and patiently passed the ball around. However, our opponents’ superior technical ability, fitness and tactics shone through, with Hall 14 scoring and dribbling at will. Their key dangermen were their number 10 and 4, who between them scored most of the goals. The 1st half ended with a scoreline of 5-0 in favour of our opponents. Unfazed by the large scoreline, Hall 11 battled hard throughout the second half, but our opponents were solid defensively and limited our chances to speculative long shots on goal that were comfortable for their keeper to collect. Hall 14 stamped their authority on the match by scoring another 5 goals, the pick of which were a pair of long range efforts from their number 14. The match ended 10-0 to hall 14. Magnanimous in defeat, we gave 3 cheers for the winning team. I’m sure the water polo team will learn from this experience and emerge stronger for the next match. Netball v Hall 8
Written by Wai Sing Photos by Ajay Hall 11 Netball girls travelled down to the NIE Netball court on a sunny Tuesday morning to play their first match against Hall 8. It was the first day of the IH games and the girls were not certain how they would perform in their first match. The captain, Jeanette (Wing Defense) led the other starting seven namely Janice (Goal Attack), Xian Min (Goal Shooter), Hui Wen ( Wing Attack), Hui Jing (Centre), Hui Ling (Goal Defense) and Angela (Goal Keeper) to start off the match in the 1st quarter. When Hall 8 took the first point in the opening minutes, it became apparent that Angela would have a hard time considering the height difference between her and their GA. Hall 11 did not have a try on the goal ring until 8 minutes later when Xian Min took a second try and leveled it at one a piece. However, Hall 8 took the lead again minutes later. 1st quarter was a good fight which ended in 1-2. In the 2nd quarter, Hall 11 stepped up a notch and played creatively to break Hall 8’s attacks. Our GS had several chances but looked to be intimidated by their GK. It was back and forth until the last two minutes when our GA finally grabbed the ball and shoot into the ring to level it. Just as we were gaining confidence, Hall 8 scored at the other end, seconds after the restart. Not wanting to be left out, our WA passed to Janice and scored another point! But Hall 8 was persistent and scored seconds after the restart once again to make it 3-4. It was a very exciting first-half. After the half-time break, the girls looked all ready to put up another fight. Our GS had several tries again but the ball just refused to sink in. Our centre then produced a wonderful build-up play, which was passed to our GA and we were level yet again. 4-4! However, Hall 8 took the lead again a few seconds later with a quick restart. The girls were playing better and stronger now and most importantly, when the ball was passed to Xian Min, she took a deep breath and scored! 5-5! They know they had to stop their tall GA and GS from scoring but it just could not be done. Hall 8 scored again. But now it was our turn to score right after the restart where our GS produced our sixth goal to tie the game. At the dying seconds of the 3rd quarter, the girls now feel the heat. Their play slowed down. Hall 8 scored again to make it 6-7. Three minutes break was given before the whistle blew for the 4th quarter. Our GS made no mistake this time to level the game with a high pass from the GA. It was still early in the last quarter and we might have a chance. It seemed like our GK and GD were getting tired from all the high jumps to block the ball. Their GA and GS took advantage and took a two point lead for the first time in the game. The team and the supporters were getting anxious and frustrated. Our WD then snatched the ball passed to the Centre, who passed on which led to the GS who closed the gap again. There was a glimpse of hope for the team. But in the end, Hall 8 defense was strong enough to hold off our team to win 8-10. There is bound to be disappointment in the team considering we played well against a team who had two much taller scorers. Jeanette also conceded that they were tired and the closing minutes of the quarter. By and large, it was a great fight from the girls and hope they will get a deserving result the next game. |
Othello: 14 Dec 09
Article & photos by Matthew Lim
Hall XI made its first debut in the Inter-hall games today over Othello. Having attended my first game, I was impressed with the turnout and intensity of the games. Each hall had their victory cheers and best team forward as they vie for their first ‘gold’ in the games.
Our representatives this year were Othello captain, Kason, Shi Huan, Kenny, Jek, Pamela, Recreation Secretary Tom and our very own President Mei Rong! The morale was all high as our team was all prepared to take on the best from the other halls.
The first game kicked off with a match against Hall 10. Undoubtedly the competition was fierce as each player crafted moves while countering his/her opponent’s actions. Both teams wanted to win badly and have a good start. Mei Rong was leading strongly initially on her first game, but her opponent was craftier where he plotted a set of final moves to take the set. On the other tables Kenny and others too faced strong resistance from Hall 10 and the match ended 5-0.
Nonetheless, the competitive and ‘never say die’ spirit lives with Hall XI as the team was composed and won over the next set with Hall 13 3-2. Hall XI Othello team has indeed showed me what tenacity and perseverance is about as despite being a small team with minimal substitutes/reserves, they persevered on through the seven matches. Player Jek joined the team during the afternoon and boosted the team’s fighting spirit as the team won rounds against Hall 2 and 8. We were indeed very determined to proceed to the semis but the other Halls had stronger players as we lost other sets to Hall 12, 5 and 9. The final count of matches won by Hall XI was a marked improvement from last year at 3 wins and 4 losses. Commendable effort here and we hope to see the Othello team in the finals next year!
All in all, kudos to the sixteen teams for the great sportsmanship as well to our Hall XI Othello team who had trained hard for this event. With that we look forward to the other games in the upcoming weeks!
